Excerpts

Encounters: Radio Experiences in the North takes your ears to the top of 60 foot trees in a windstorm and to the blows of humpback whales who plunge the depths of the ocean. Listen to this short sound montage to get a feel for the audio journey you can take when you listen to Encounters!

Glacier

Recorded from a kayak in Glacier Bay National Park, this Encounters episode brings you the huge explosive sounds of calving glaciers. Masses of floating ice, chatty seabirds and playful seals are part of this Alaska encounter.

Polar Bear

As sea ice disappears because of climate change so may polar bears. Some ecologists believe polar bears could be extinct by the end of the century. Richard Nelson’s encounter includes watching polar bears feast on the remains of bowhead whales up on the edge of the Beaufort Sea

Spirit of the Bear

On this Encounters segment Richard Nelson keeps company with a black bear in the Alaskan wild. Biologists and naturalists have a lot to tell us about these animals, but Alaskan Native Elders believe this is only part of the story. They say there is something more, something mysterious, something beyond the reach of science about Black Bears—a spirit in the forest.

Mosquito

Anybody who has lived or traveled in the North Country knows the mosquito is a big part of summer life. Join Richard Nelson as he is tormented by a whining, hungry hoard of mosquitoes. Above the Arctic Circle in the Brooks Range, Nelson shares the stories of Koyukon Indian elders along with scientific information about these buzzing critters. Learn how mosquitoes live and what they eat when there’s no human flesh to dine on. It’s hard to stop swatting and scratching when you hear this humming chorus of exasperation.
